The Ginsburg Blog update for March 14th...just what to expect from your kids.

We are still having beautiful weather here in Sydney and I put Asher's feet into the pool today to cool him off (temperature and temperament) and boy did he love it. I would like the kids to start swimming lessons as we live near such a beautiful beach here at Bungan and all love the water so much. Kayla just runs off towards the ocean at a rate of knots, not knowing when to stop until a wave comes toward her. Asher just heads straight for the pools, mouth wide open, ready to eat anything in his way but just how many activities can I fit into the week?

Why is it that there is such a huge need in our society to give our kids lessons? To crawl and walk properly, lessons to swim, lessons to play music, lessons for maths and reading...and all this before school has even started. I can understand getting them ready for school with pre-school routines, but when do kids these days have fun? Should they be able to read and write before school - isn't that was school is meant to teach you?

When you have a child, the local community nurse may put you in touch with other local mums with children of the same age group. Mothers groups are supposed to be just for social catch ups for ourselves and our children, but regardless of whether you are that way inclined or not, you do compare your kids. Don't get me wrong, I love my group of new friends, where else can you whinge about your kids and husbands to people who understand? I just know the last thing I exepected to find myself doing, was compare my kid but you can't help asking is my child keeping up with everyone else? Especially as Kayla's development is slower than other kids her age, it took me a while to let all this go and let her grow at her own pace.

But all I can say is don't be too alarmed, whether you are attending all the activities with a super genius mini-Mozart or Einstein or Thorpe in the making or just visiting the playground when you can. As long as you spend time with your kids - banging saucepans, counting as you walk up the library steps to borrow a book, or go swimming at the beach - just enjoy special time with your kids as much as you can.
