Bondi Beach

- Eastern Suburbs beach, close to city

Bondi is a beautiful city beach with lots of cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants. Beware it's crowded... though if you're after the typical Australian buzz it's a good option. There is a great walk to Bronte along the coast which is a must for any visitor. The shopping is pretty good but best are the markets which are on every Sunday

Bondi beach is easily accessible by taxi, bus and rail (Bondi Junction) to the city so you can enjoy your stay and see all the sights.

It has lots of accommodation alternatives such as a hotel, B&B, backpackers or you could look for some short term rentals.

Inner City

- stylish pubs, shops and colouful characters

If Bondi is a little too quiet try Kings Cross, Sydney's red-light district. Just next to the massive Coca Cola sign, you will find plenty of bars and clubs with all your colourful characters, strip clubs and a few upmarket hotels. It is close enough to walk down William St to all the main city sights.

Rushcutters Bay is down the street if you're after something a little quieter on the harbour or perhaps up the road at the more fashionable Paddington where there is great quality shopping and markets.

Woolloomooloo

- close to Botanical Gardens and city

If you would like to stay closer to the city but not in it, consider Woolloomoolo. Situated right on the naval wharfs in Sydney Harbour and close proximity to the Botanical Gardens and CBD it is a great location. You can eat a world famous pie at Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the streetfront or look for Russel Crowe at his apartment there. The more rustic pubs are great for lunch and a beer or try the expensive restaraunts at the wharf for a special night out.

You can stay at the exclusive apartments on the wharf or even find a hostel close by.

- tourist shopping  next to the city

Darling Harbour has some of the good tourist attractions including the shopping center, Sydney Aquarium, iMax Theater, Star City Casino and Cockle Bay Wharf. To extend your shopping you can easily walk into the centre of town to the Queen Victoria Building or Pitt St Mall. It's like a lot of inner harbour tourist spots around the globe with a huge selection of restaraunts, bars and nightclubs to choose from.

There are a lot of large chain hotels around the area or nearby Pyrmont so just take your pick.

Manly

- beaches and shops 30 mins from the city

Manly is a great option if you want to keep out of the city and still be close as it is only a 30 min ferry ride or 15 min jet cat ride to Circular Quay. The trip is easier than jumping in a car, bus or train and you'll get to relax and take in spectactular views of Sydney Harbour. Manly is the most southern of Sydney's Northern beaches with a great beach that has surfing options from the beginner to the advanced. If you don't like the waves you can even swim on the harbour side or Shelley Beach where snorkeling and diving also is great.

As for accomodation, you'll find lots of options ranging from hotels, to backpackers to short term flats.

Palm Beach

- Northern beach of the rich and famous

Some folk would argue that Palm beach is not really in Sydney as it feels so secluded. It is a beach town suburb that has some of Sydney's most expensive property with amazing water views. There is a great long beach with various surf spots and the Barrenjoey Lighthouse at the north end. You can walk up to the Lighthouse via a rocky path and some steps for an awesome view of Pittwater and the Central Coast.

For accommodation, you can get some fantastic holiday lettings or boutique hotels like Jonah's and Barrenjoey house, but only if you can afford it.

- Southern beaches

Cronulla is one of Sydney's  most southern beaches. It's similar to Bondi and  Manly as it's a built up beach suburb. You'll find hotels and other accomodation here with  a beachside  mall full of restaraunts and bars similar to Manly's Corso.

Some folk may call Bundeena the Palm Beach of the South as it also feels so far from the citylife. This little beachside town is tucked away in the Royal National Park and is about an hours drive to the city that can also be easily accessed via a ferry from Cronulla. It's a good option if you want get away from it and explore the national park and experience some of the great cliff walks along the sea.

Accommodation is limited, you are best to check out the B&B's for a real family getaway.

The Rocks is the oldest part of Sydney, and a place you can wander around in the alleyways for hours.
