NEW YORK NEW YORK ...the big apple..the land of opportunity...the hustle and bustle...you either love it or hate it...I loved it! TIMES SQUARE IN THE DAY TIME
The NY city skyline is filled with awesome architecture of old churches and museums. At the other end of the spectrum are the modern landmarks such as the Guggenheim Museum pictured here. Both are what makes NY a fantastic city for anyone to visit. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a wonderful display of artifacts throughout the ages.
Times Square is hectic, with all the bright lights and even at midnight it is full of 1000's of people. It has its very own nearly naked singing cowboy parading his stuff in the middle of the traffic - an experience not to be missed. Did I mention traffic - there are just taxis and more taxis as there are very few parking spaces that aren't astronomically priced!
Ahhh, the Statue of Liberty. A vision suggesting times of freedom and democracy for all...we can all just keep wishing. Best viewed from the Staten Island Ferry - you can take round trip for free on Sundays like we did, rather than go with all the other tourists onto the island. Other landmarks not to be missed are the view from the top of the Empire State Building and take a walk accross the Brooklyn Bridge. I was in NY not long after 9/11 and the World Trade Center Memorial was full of photos and flowers and it was so moving, I just hope that we have leared a lot from the experience and that the message of tolerance can be spread. Definatey worth a visit when you are down checking out Wall St and the Financial District. Central Park is so huge it even plays host to events such talks by the Dali Lama, which we were lucky enough to hear to a massive crowd for free. It is a great place to get away from all the hustle and bustle, take a romantic horse and cart ride or just sit down by the pond and watch all the different people wandering around. Look for all the celebrities while shopping at downtown SoHo with designer stores and street vendors blending into one. Then head over to Canal Street markets for anything from baby turtles to all the rip off brands of handbags you can imagine. You can loose yourself around the streets of this area for a whole day if you have the time. Go to There is a great music scene in NY so find some locals and get them to take you a club off the beaten track for a genuinely good night out. We saw some great Jazz up in 100 and something street featuring the same drummer from Miles Davis' Kind of Blue album - what a treat that was! You could also catch a Broadway Show if that is your thing. Union Square has some great alternative bars and restaraunts and the Farmers Markets on the weekends are a treat with plenty of fresh produce. |
